My Rav 4 with the cruise control off has 6 times jumped from 30mph while driving in town to close to 90mph. Last time I almost got killed because when I jammed on the brakes they were rendered ineffective due to the racing engine. i ended up passing around a blind curve doing 70mph in a 35mph zone to avoid a collision. The only way I have been able to stop this is by shutting off the engine. 3 times I brought it to the dealership and 3 times they found nothing wrong. this started at 3, 000 miles and now my Rav only has 11, 000 miles and is still under the 3 year original warrenty. Toyota did send an engineer to inspect my vehicle and concluded my problem was due to the non existant factory floor mat despite my telling him it happened without the mat.
As a result Toyota has offered me a free set of factory floor mats the very mats they blame for the death of 4 people. I have googled throttle problems and have found tons of complaints from other Toyota owners including Prius with the same problem. Toyota is hiding behind the floor mat issue. i am afraid next time I won't be lucky enought to have the space to deal with a run away car.
