Transamerica Moving company contracted with me to move my belongings to another state.
The amount that they quoted for my move was $2500 (based upon the weight of my belongings and the distance of the move). I packed all of my belongings except my artwork. I was told by the representatives at Transamerica that their movers would pack my artwork, and shrink wrap my furniture. I was not informed, in advance, that I would be charged extra for the supplies needed to pack and wrap these belongings. I was led to believe that the $2500 charge was all inclusive.
Despite the fact that my belongings were several thousand pounds lighter than the original estimate, Transamerica charged me $1100 more than the quoted price. They ultimately charged me $1100 extra for bubble wrap, boxes and tape. They sent 3 movers to move me, and I found them to be unprofessional, intimidating, uncooperative, and unreliable.
DETAILS OF THE MOVE:
On moving day, 3 TransAmerica movers showed up several hours late, to start the move. I gave them specific instructions regarding what items were priorities. I wanted them to move large and heavy items, first. And boxes and smaller items were a secondary priority---just in case the truck was too small for the load, I wanted the professional movers to transport the most difficult items. I noticed immediately that they were not good at following directions, but I wasn't comfortable confronting them. They began loading the truck with lots of boxes and smaller items. and by MIDNIGHT when the truck was fully loaded, they informed me that they couldn't get MY BED, or Dresser or REFRIGERATOR on the truck. I later had to hire additional movers to move these items. Transamerica was paid to move these items, and didn't do so.
I also noticed one of the movers, using an excessive amount of bubble wrap and tape when preparing my art work for the move. I asked him about the excessive use of packing supplies and he responded by stating that this was his own special way of insuring the safety of people's valuables. I was later charged $1097 in extra fees because of this mover's "special way of protecting my artwork".
Another problem arose when the movers informed me, at Midnight, that they planned to deliver my belongings, out of state---THE NEXT DAY. The original plan, that I agreed to (with my Transamerica sales rep), was to receive my belongings 2 days later. This plan would allow me time to clean up the home I was leaving, sleep, and travel to my new home, out of state. But these movers, told me, emphatically, that their schedule had been changed, and that they were instructed to deliver my belongings the NEXT DAY.
So, I hurried to clean up my place quickly, and I slept 3-4 hours, in order to be able to travel, out of state, to meet the movers at my new home. I was told that they would deliver my belongings by NOON the next day. I hurried to arrive by noon---However the movers didn't arrive, to deliver my belongings, until 5PM. And it was obvious to me, when they arrived, that they had opened the truck containing my belongings---despite the fact that they assured me that they would not do so. To this day, there are items that are missing.
When they arrived, they informed me that they were in a rush to unload my belongings because they were also scheduled to do another move that day.
Before unloading the truck, the movers made me pay the bill. I noticed that the bill was grossly inflated, and I complained. The lead mover made it clear that I had to pay the bill in order to get my belongings unloaded. I reluctantly paid them but told them that I was paying under protest.
As the movers began to unload my belongings, they appeared to be irritable, exhausted, and fatigued ( or "hung-over"). Things went badly from there. As they moved my furniture and belongings, they were careless and hurried. They broke the light fixture outside of my home. They banged furniture into my walls, scratching the paint and chipping the plaster. They claimed that certain items were too heavy to carry upstairs, so they left them downstairs. They dropped, scratched and damaged certain items. They refused to place certain items in certain rooms, stating that they were not allowed to arrange furniture. They were being so careless and reckless with my belongings that my neighbors came over to see what the problem was. When they realized the the movers were using the headlights from my car as a source of lighting (because they were not prepared to unload in the dark), they loaned them a light to use.
The movers, left my home in complete disarray, sofa groups were separated in different rooms of the house---sometimes parts of one sofa group was taking upstairs and other sections of the same sofa group would be left downstairs. I had to hire additional movers to finish the job of placing the furniture where it needed to be placed.
Lastly, at least one of the movers appeared to be a drug user. I feared for my safety, knowing that this person knew where I lived. When, at the end of the day he prompted me to give him and his crew a tip. I did so without hesitation---because I didn't want this man (or his co-workers) to be upset with me. I resented the fact that Transamerica sent movers like these to my home, exposing me and my family to this type of "shady" individual.
When I tried to complain about the services, noone at Transamerica was willing to listen to me.
They truly didn't care. They got $1100 more than the quoted amount and they carried fewer items and less weight than they contracted to move. BUYERS BEWARE!
