On Friday last, June 10th, I went to Wide Bay Building Society here in Mackay Queensland. I put my Travelex Eurocard in the ATM to get a balance. In Australian money. I then went into the Building Society office and proceeded to apply to have the money
transferred into my Wide Bay account. The young lady rang Brisbane Travelex to find out how long it would take to get the money transferred. She had told me they have been taking three weeks plus. There were a backlog of claims.
She suggested I go to money exchange at Harvey TravelWorld in Mackay. She rang them through at the head office and they told her they could not give out that much in cash, but they could write a cheque.
I said that would be better.
I arrived at Harvey's Travel World money exchange. She started to fill forms out. The lady rang the office to get a figure. She told me the amount. I said please hold proceedings, that's $560 less than the read out receipt from the ATM. I said I would come back as soon as I saw
a friend, the manager at the Building Society. I showed the manager and he took me to his chief accountant.
The Wide Bay accountant rang Brisbane and questioned the amount they had provided. The person at your head office informed them the amount was right. The ATM receipt was wrong.
The reason given is that... Australian ATM's have a problem reading and calculating foreign currencies. That was why their was a discrepancy of $560 between the amounts in your favour.
I took that as bible, but after talking with other people, and a few businessmen they seemed to think that was not plausible and unacceptable. This all happened on Friday 10th, 2011, the day after I arrived back in Australia.
I have now banked the cheque and I would like a written answer from your company in the form of a letter or Email, explaining in full the reason for this anomally
An aged pensioner I have much more need of money and do not need these type of "plausible" reasons for "computer hitches" that seem to appear in business from time to time in this day an age. The handling of electronic media is hard enough without glitches.
My name is Patrick Deegan and I purchased the Euro Card from your Finance Company (Travelex Limited) through Wide Bay Capricorn/ Mackay Caneland Branch/Account No. 4377 4700 0297 8874. December 2011 (approx Dec. 7th)
I would like you to give this some thought before your reply.
I have previously had problems with your company (June/July 2004 in Calgary Canada) and I am prepared to take this to the media. They are particularly interested because of this being a second time I have had cause for complaint.
In that case you double dipped me twice from memory, (and then told me you could do nothing to help for 10 days), by then I would have been back in Australia, causing me much grief, as I was short of money and visiting a late ill friend.
That amount was supposed to be $300 Canadian Dollars, you took $600.
It would have been nice to have purchased my 3 children duty free gifts that I had budgeted for, but sadly because of you mistake that did not happen.
Now, I have already approached the TV media. I feel I should give you a chance to state the case properly. They are awaiting my return.
I have no doubt the public will be interested in the vulnerability of our ATMs.
Feel free to ask me for the proof.
I have the ATM receipt and a transaction receipt Card Return (1=retain) : 0.
Obtained. Balance Enquiry… Record No. 2210. (My birth date: 22-10-1944, 2210).
