TurboTax Reviews

Nightmare
I used turbo tax online to do my taxes myself. What a nightmare. Filing for federal was free, and state taxes is a little over $30. I lived and worked in New York and Mass that year and so it cost over $60 to do it myself. Plus I accidentally clicked "deduction maximizer" which charged me an extra $10. Ok. That was my fault. So total was $76. I dont own property, im single, no kids, blah blah just had a couple of W2 forms to file.

An error came up at the end saying I could not file my MA state return electronically because in MA if you are a part year resident you have to mail in your forms. No big deal. Right? It told me to print out and follow the directions but the directions told me I e-filed and no further action was needed. Checking on the status, however, my MA return did not appear. I tried it a million different ways with the same result. What the *!@^?
So I contacted customer service. I told them I can not efile with my MA return I just needed to know what to do. After and hour of bullshit of these people who had NO idea what was going on, asking pointless questions and going in circles, I realized that there must have been some weird malfunction on their site that caused it to print out saying I had efiled. They kept making me check how the status was and transfered me around and no results. Said they could do nothing for me. I paid $76 and they can't do anything!!!

I ended up calling some revenue department or something in MA and a guy was like, here's an address just send x y and z and your all set. Took me 5 min to get my damn answer.

I will NEVER use turbo tax online again. Not only does it not work properly, customer service SUCKS.

Stay away
I filed my taxes with Turbo Tax on line. The request to import last years taxes was agreed upon. The imported the wrong amount and I was told they could not correct or re-submit my return.

I had to mail my return, which will take at least six weeks.

Scam
I have used TurboTax for the past several years and have always been quite pleased with it. This year, I have even been using its free, on-line service called "ItsDeductible, " which allows you to track all kinds of charitable donations and attaches government-approved dollar values to them.

I was thinking about purchasing TurboTax on-line this year instead of buying a disk with all that packaging material that just gets discarded (or recycled, as appropriate).

So I went on-line to check it out.

Be cautious and pay attention to the costs if you want to download the program vs. buying the disk.

To download the TurboTax Deluxe version, the cost is $29.95. Then, to download the State version, that will cost an additional $36.95. Total download cost is $66.90.

To buy the traditional CD via the website, that will cost $59.95 -- and the State version is included!

I can't say that is the same for the other versions. And I do know they have a free, basic version (but you still need to buy the State version).

I find it a little disheartening that it would cost more to download the Deluxe programs than to buy the CDs with all that nasty packaging no one needs.

Seems like it makes sense that it would always be cheaper to offer something via download than to offer it on a disk with the expensive packaging, but I don't own the business, so what do I know?

I love TurboTax and know they can charge whatever they want. I have every intention of buying the software today. I will go to Costco where it will be cheaper than the $59.95 -- PLUS I will get to use a $10-off coupon there, so that's great!

Just be cautious when doing your own shopping!

Never again
I used online Turbo Tax for my federal return in 2008. I received a refund. Now, the IRS has sent me a letter stating information was omitted and I now owe them $550.00. This is not right. I fully answered all questions that were asked and the information was determined to be correct by their "error check". Turbo Tax's position is that it was my fault. It makes no sense and I will never use their service again

Amount error
I used turbo tax 2008. I printed out the forms beofre e-filing. Everything was correct. I got a letter from the IRS stating that there I owed $601 due to the incorrect amount was entered for my income tax. I rechecked the amount on my original printout. It was correct. When I went to print it again from turbotax, the amount was e-filed with the incorrect amount. This was a software error on Turbotax's side.

Big fraud
I received an underreporting letter from the IRS for my 2008 taxes in May of 2010. The funny thing, I allowed a friend to use my turbo tax and she too received the same underreporting letter for 2008. I contacted IRS and they explained that the amount I claimed on my retirement income was different from what "I reported." I went back into Turbo Tax to see if I had entered the wrong information and I didn't. I checked the form that was submitted and the entry was different. I am angry because I have never owed IRS. I am always careful when dealing with my returns. Now I owe almost $2600! Why did it take so long for IRS to find out about this under reporting. I was convinced there was something wrong with Turbo Tax or the IRS system in 2008 because I had never heard of so many people in my inner circle having problems with their 2008 taxes. Now, seeing others in the same situation I know I am not alone! I agree, I hope a class action is filed!

Run around
I'm complaining about Turbo tax! I received a notice from IRS about 2008 taxes. They say it is wrong and want more money, thousands more. I am tired of all these problems caused by turbo tax. I need some help here, how do I get it in stead of the run-around!

Scam
My story is much the same as the ones I've read here...did my 2008 taxes using Turbo Tax. All seemed fine until two years later when I received the notice from the IRS that I owed them $600 for not reporting state tax refund income and retirement income. Looked at my copy of the return printed from Turbo Tax and the state refund is clearly there on my copy, but not on the one the IRS got...hmmmm. Class action suit sounds like a pretty good idea to me. I also find it disturbing that, when I pulled up this consumer affairs page to read complaints about Turbo Tax, the first thing I see at the top is an ad for Turbo Tax along with a link to their web page!
