I didn't find out until a month later that my soon to be ex-husband was able to change my Michcon gas to Universal despite not being on the account. I wasn't aware of this until I received a letter in the mail from Universal congratulating me on my swich over the them. They came to my door on August 26, 2008 and I didn't receive a letter until October 1, 2008 which at this time was too late get out of the contract since 30 days has passed and they told me that I would have to pay $250.00 to cancel along with paying my $250.00 gas bill so that's $500.00 I would like to know how they can do this without me the consumer's concent, just the word of my husband. I thought that was against the law, because if any other bill collection company calls you and wants to ask about a bill they will not even give out any information unless it's the person on the account. Now I'm stuck in this contract for 5 years. I'm very upset about this and they still come to the door to get us to recruite to them. I've tried everything to get out of this but it seems to be impossible. I was very happy with Michcon and had no intentions of switching over. I can't see how they would do it on the word of my soon to be ex-husband he didn't have to show them any type of ID or even better he isn't even on the account. It's under my SS number. So please someone explain how this can be done. Any assistance in this matter would be appreciated.
