Not returning disbursed funds
I was a student at the UOP, and attended class for 2 days, afterward I tried to withdraw and after many calls to the school and advisors I was told I would have to wait 29 days to withdraw. I sent a letter of withdrawl to the school and they responded with telling me every thing would be taken care of, but after about a month I received a letter saying I owed the lenders their money back for my loans and that I had to get the money from my school. I called and called the school with no luck until I got one of the lenders to contact the school and the school told me again every thing would be taken care of. I then started another college and they said I still owed money on my fasfa. After one quarter at the new school I find out that I'm still enrolled at UOP and that they took my Pell money and when I spoke to someone at the school they said that's their money and I'll have to take that up with the lenders. My information on UOP websites continue to change and I have documented it all but now I owe all of the money back when the school took it and will not return it. Now I can't continue my education at my new school because my fasfa says I have an outstanding balance and will not disburse funds until this is paid, when it's not even due for another 2 months and my new school says I have to have this fixed in 2 days ... Someone please help because I'm running out of time What do I do?

Financial officers and practices
I am very unhappy with the way the UoP has treated me in regards to my financial officer.
The original officer I was assigned seemed knowledgeable enough, but failed to tell me verbally that my aid would not cover the cost of my 4th and 8th classes. If I had been told this (although it is in the very small print of my contract), I would have kept shopping around for schools. Unfortunately I was laid off the third week into my first five week online class. My financial advisor was then removed from my case and I was assigned someone who refuses to return calls, doesn't really seem to want to help, and won't provide me with my options. I am going to contact my lender and see what recourse I have to completely get out of my contract altogether, as I really feel like UoP has cheated me.

Bilking Students and Unfair
I was desirous of expanding my education at a late age in my life and wanted to get updated on some issues including computers and programming, management today, etc. I started with The University of Phoenix with a few online courses. Well, I'm sure many experienced what I did with the ever changing financial councelors, academic councelors and every other person that worked for The University of Phoenix being there one day and gone the next. One email worked one day and not the next. No one knew what the other person was doing and one couldn't get a question answered at all. It was obvious that this, what I call COMPANY, not University, was growing faster than it could handle and their very own management was way out of control. They had no idea what they were doing. They had the nerve to attempt to teach courses on management? There were so many screw ups, so many wrong answers, so many lies, so many problems presented to me in a very short period of t ime that I couldnt' concentrate on my studies as was the case with so many others at that time. Finally, (I thought), someone came to my aid and told me that The University owed me $2243.00 as a credit and it would be put on my account. Well, needless to say it never appeared on my account and now two and one half years later three credit reports show me oweing exactly $2, 243.00 through a collection agency called APOLLO which is owned by The University of Phoenix. After countless calls, countless emails, countless mailings, notes, etc I just couldn't achieve one inch forward with all this. Finally, I just decided to send them their $2, 243.00 but I put on the back of the check that they had to take me off of all three of the credit reporting agencies and show "Paid in FUll" on them. I also said "this check is paid without prejudice". Well, Ms. Genie Winship, the Account Analyst after getting the money in her hand said she would return the check to me and wanted an other check re-issued to her. I simply wrote her back and said NO. I told her that if she refused payment that I would not re-issue any check and that she nor the University would EVER get one red cent from me for eternity. I mean that. I am disabled. I am near a PH.D. Degree, which I don't need and I don't need them, nor the University for anything. I could care less about what APOLLO GROUP says about what they THINK I owe them. I do NOT owe them one dime and when I decided to pay them anyway, they refused my money. Therefore, I say they get nothing now. This so called University treats students who are sincere like a number, not a student. It is MONEY, MONEY, MONEY and that's all that matters to them. I got sick of it and I want all who read this to know that you are in for a ride when you deal with The University of Phoenix and it is NOT going to be a nice ride. It is going to be a wreck.
Damage Resulting = This has cost me time, wasted energy, postage, fees to consultants, research fees and physical and emotional stress which is unbelievable over what I thought from the beginning was going to be a pleasant experience. It turned out to be a NIGHTMARE!!!

Fraud
I originally started UOP in Late December of 2008, ever since then I have been dragged around by enrollment counselors as well as academic "advisors" and financial aid "advisors."
My first BIG problem was in my Critical thinking class last block. In week 4 I received an e-mail from the instructor stating I had plagiarized a discussion question. This discussion questions was 10 points and I had a 98% in the class. I still called my academic advisor, everyday for 6 days and emailed her before even receiving a response. After she finally got in touch with me I was told I had to appeal to the board of academic affairs once I had received my letter. I did and did not hear anything back until I had called numerous people for many weeks. They told me they were standing by the teachers decision, and would not give me any proof of what I had done, or tell me what I had copied. Nothing I could do, by the end of the class I received a 97.61% as a final grade, but my participation points as well as discussion questions points were taken away which added up to 30 points. Being a A student with a 3.5 GPA this whole situation just astonished me.
Monday June 16, 2009 I called my academic counselor saying I wanted to withdrawal; she then 3-wayed my financial aid advisor and we had talked. Both of which were very rude, in the end I backed out of filing the paperwork because they both told me if I withdrew I would receive a penalty from Wells Fargo (Student Loan Lender) for not completing the 24 credits through UOP. They also stated they could not tell me how much this penalty would be and that I would not know until the whole withdraw process was already completed but it could be anywhere from $20 to $1, 200.
Today, Wednesday the 18Th I called Wells Fargo and was told there is no withdrawal fee from them and the withdrawal fee from Wells Fargo as a lender and that the fee must be from University of Phoenix.
Needless to say, I will be withdrawing and if there is a fee from UOP I will not be paying it.
They do not teach you ANYTHING. The instructors do not respond within the 24 hour said limit. Also, if you attend there good luck on getting a hold of anyone, it seems like all they do is transfer you to other workers voice-mails!
**Most of there classes are not transferable! Talk about wasting over $7, 000.

False advising sent to collections
I enrolled in University of Phoenix In June 2005 I drop in January 2007 when I found out that my enrolledment councelor gave me and multiple students false advising about gratuating from college. Dave said we would finish college in 2yrs and I would get my Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice but it was all a lie. They just wanted to enroll students and rip them off!!! I think that is one of the worse colleges ever. All they do is lie and get your hopes up. After I drop my class they are billing me for it even though I din't attend and now when I am trying to go to a new college they won't give me my transcript since it's on hold because it's in collections. I don't know how they expect us to pay for a class which we never even took. University of Phoenix is a rip off. Who ever has probles with them should contact the Better Bussiness Bureau 909-825-0490 or their website www.bbb.org

Deception and Verbal Telling of Policies To Students That Are Unwritten In Student Handbook
I want to be in a class action lawsuit against UoP. I feel terribly wronged by them and am looking for other people who want to join a class action lawsuit.
Please contact me at (847) 578-0350 or [email protected] with your story and support for a class action lawsuit against UoP.
-Elizabeth
My story:
I've been wanting out and UoP is basically wanting to hold me hostage by telling me to "stick with it". They've even threatened me with having to pay for MTE 508 (Models, Theories, and Instructional Strategies).
According to the HELP pages there's supposed to be a withdrawal form if I go into 'PROGRAM' and then 'SERVICES'. However, there is NO form. I feel terribly deceived.
I've been to numerous colleges and universities and had no problem withdrawing from a class or the institution itself. Now, all of a sudden, it seems impossible to get ahold of people and start a formal disenrollment process from the university itself.
I've also withdrawn from classes from EVERY college and university I've ever been to and have NEVER had to pay for a class I withdrew from. My financial aid has ALWAYS covered withdrawn classes and I've been left to eventually owe financial aid back if it was paid for in the form of a loan.
A letter was sent to me several months ago telling me when UoP was getting their disbursement and when I was getting mine and my financial aid counselor, /name removed/, even called to inform me that they had their money to cover 'x' amount of credit hours (classes). As far as I'm concerned, they already got the money to cover this course and now I owe the loan people back.
I'm in terrible financial straights and am on the verge of going bankrupt (been 6 months now since I've been unemployed.) I don't know if I'll be able to afford to pay them anything if they come back at me and say I owe 'x' amount of dollars and what's worse is iIf I don't pay whatever they say I owe in 90 days, it goes to collections, who I hear is merciless. Absolutely merciless.
My financial aid cousnelor said we discussed how it all works if I ever had to disenroll and what would happen if I did when we first spoke after my initial enrollment in January. That's nice, but these things need to be covered in writing in their handbook and it's not. There's no written policy outlining withdrawal from the university and the fact you'll eb stuck holding the bag and paying something to them. THIS IS WRONG!
Through some online searches last night, I found numerous complaints against UoP:
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/search.html?cx=partner-pub-0200629403145096%3Aqt7mbbqybbg&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=university+of+phoenix#1129
http://university-of-phoenix.pissedconsumer.com/
I've read numerous things online about how they engage in unethical business practices and it sickens me to no end. I now realize I made a horrible decision by enrolling in UoP.

Education? NOT
My daughter is/was who knows??? a student of the University of Phoenix. She was so excited and was told that she had received the financial aid and that she would receive her degree to be a school teacher. I told her to check out these type of message boards before commiting to the program. She did not take my advise and is now paying the price. I did my ABA with AIU onlilne and I recieved books, something UOP does not provide to their students. I had a email to each instructor for questions, something UOP does not provide their students. She has failed the 4th course because her work is not posting and she can not get in touch with the teacher, advisor or dean. I hope this complaint will assist someone in making their decision not to attend UOP, as my daughter has found out, Mother knows best. AIU is okay but I am attending Virginia Tech for my Bachelors in Healthcare Management as they offer a better program and their accreditdation is not as wishy washy as AIU's.

Complaints
I have attempted to make contact with my financial advisor and the office of dispute management on several occasions about closing my account and getting my financial aid released for me to apply to another university. Well, guess what, they can bother you like hell to get you to sign up, but once you are trying to leave you cannot. It is the worse experience ever. I wish I had seen these other complaints prior to signing up with them. I am even more in debt than before, and have nothing to show for it. They lied about me being able to be certified in LA, after 6 months into the program I found out that I would be only certified to teach in Arizona and that I would still have to work toward my certification in Louisiana. Oh, and by the way it was not told to me by the UoP but by the certification counselor for LA. It has been almost 2 months since my last class and they still have yet to release me from the university or release my financial aid. Does anyone know how to file a formal complaint with them?

Lied:Told No Loan, Then Told, Yes, there is a loan
Hi
My daughter was ripped by UOP and we are trying to get more people that were ripped off in the same way.
Her story is that, she is a single mom and thought she was getting a pell grant, to not have to pay anything what so ever for schooling, Her enrollment counselor says in the notes at UOP, that he walked her thru the loan process and told her how much the pmts would be, etct...BUT he never did, he told her she was not getting a loan that it was just formality for in case she wanted a loan. She would have never signed up with UOP if she had known she was getting a loan.
I specifically asked my daughter, if she was sure she was not getting a loan and she said yes, it's all free, because she's not working and she's a single mom...well they screwed her and now they are saying that she owes $15, 000.00 in student loans and that "she signed" which she was TOLD to sign, that it was all formality.
If we can get enough people, we will file a class action law suit. So if there is anyone that was told, they would not have to pay anything on a continuous basis from UOP, and now has to pay those loans, please email us
our email for this issue we are using is: [email protected]
Hope to hear back from you
Sincerely
Sheila Robinson

Sign you up, Then leave you hanging!!
I have attended UOP for about a year and a half with fairly good results as far as professors are concerned. However, dealing with my financial/academic advisors has been a pain staking process. They do not return calls, respond to emails, nor do they have the knowledge about procedures that they should have. Any time I had to change my schedule they would completely screw everything up!
I had problems in my last course due to an illness, which I brought to my professors attention as soon as it started to become a problem, she directed me to my academic advisor and suggested that I request an "I" which means that I would be granted additional time to complete my course.
When discussing this possibility with my advisor, he had never heard of it and stated that the only thing I could do would be to drop out of the course. (What a bunch of bull) It clearly states in the hand book that this is a viable solution. Anyway, I continued to try and complete my assignments as best as possible until my final.
I emailed my teacher that Sunday (Day seven, last day of the course) and explained that I was very ill and that I could not complete my final by midnight. I was then admitted in the hospital and was not released for several days. Upon my release I called my professor to explain my situation and she told me that her hands were tied; I should once again contact my advisor.
I followed her instructions and once again I'm not getting any help. However they did make it clear that they do not excuse finals for ANY REASON! My only alternative would be to retake the course, at my expense!! I have submitted my medical documents to prove my case but evidently that’s not good enough.
I'm sorry, but I have never heard of a school not allowing students to make up finals based on documented medical reasons!! I would have passed this course in spite of my illness causing a few late assignments had it not been for the final. Moreover, I have never received below a "B" in any of my other 16 courses. Although I have received 42 credits and I'm so close to getting my associates degree, I want nothing more than to transfer to a more respectable university.
If you do decide to apply at this university make sure that you are not late on your assignments (for any reason), don't make any changes to your schedule and don't expect to have any issues you might have to be resolved in a timely fashion. As for me, I might have to complete my Associates with UOP but I will not continue my education with them. Oh, and by the way, UOP is very over priced; especially for the service you receive. After researching other universities I could have gotten the same degree for 3/4 of the price.
