Hi, my name is Andrea,
I would like to take this opportunity to post my rating (yes, rating) of UPS, but first, I would like to write a bit about myself.
Currently, I work for a private company as an "Insider Employee", which allows me to rate restaurants, movie theatres, stores, malls and yes...even businesses!
Why businesses?
Well, only because people want the truth. Let's face it, some companies discriminate employees and do whatever they want with their companies behind closed doors. The public deserves to know what these companies are REALLY up to...this is where I come in!
As an "Insider Employee", my job is to get your dirt, rate you, and post your dirt for the world to see.
Now that we have established who I am and what I do, let's get to rating, shall we!?
---------------------------------------------
Choosing a company:
Being that there have been many complaints about UPS, I was given the task to register with "Source One Staffing" in Mantua, NJ. Since "Source One Staffing" is currently the only way to get into UPS, I posed as an unemployed, somewhat educated mom eager to fill in an Administrative position. I did get a call back from a manager there named Joan Whinna, who seemed equally eager enough to hire me ;)
The Interview: Rating - 3 of 10
During the interview, Joan seemed really nice, and offered me a temp to perm position...(good, i got in). After offering me the position, Joan went on and explained that she did not want "Source One Staffing" to know that I had gotten hired because they were not aware that she was looking to hire me permanently after 3 months. (There goes the red flag!!!). Joan offered to train me for two weeks and basically said I should be ready to work on my own after she was done training me.
My two weeks training on the billing procedures and system: Rating - 0 of 10
My training was rushed...
During the two weeks that I was trained by the "manager" Joan Whinna, she would go on and on about how I should not interact with the warehouse employees. Mostly because most of them had done jail time, have not finished school, and basically ...have no brain. Joan also gossiped about the other billers in the billing area where i was to begin working after my two weeks training was thru...
After the two weeks was done and over with, it didn't take long before i realized there were MANY things wrong with this company...!
The unpredictable billing system: Rating- 0 of 10
(Their reason for not hiring temp to perm...and favorite "reason" for discrimating employees)
The billing system would FREQUENTLY slow down completely on a daily basis, to the point where all the billers could not do their jobs! Joan was nice about everyone not being able to get their work done... at first...
Being that billing was due every Tuesday, we all had to make sure our work was even rushed at times...otherwise, Joan would threaten with firing one of the temps and getting another temp to do our job the next day. After we would turn in the billing, they always found a reason to complain and change policy almost every week...
During the times the billing system slowed down, some of the temps had to clock out and come back later, no matter how far they lived. Joan Whinna, did not want any of the temps utilizing cell phones in the office. Only Permanent employees had that luxury. The temps were considered slaves with no privileges...property of their managers.
"so they had BETTER finish their jobs...they should be appreciative that they have a job they can come to everyday. It's too easy to hire a temp" (quote from Joan whinna)
My 3-month trial period: Rating-0 of 10
By the time my 3-month trial period came by, Joan had a list of reasons why I was not competent enough to hold the job. She told others at the office that's as far as i was ever going to get so as long as she's around.
Joan Whinna as a supervisor: Rating -0 of 10
* On a constant, we would catch her gossiping about other temps.
* We overheard her on the phone with "Source One Staffing" supervisors letting them know she was not ever planning on making temporary workers to permanent employees...and giggled with the "Source One Staffing" Supervisors about how much money the billers were raking in for the company...so as long as they pushed them to the limit.
*She would change rules last minute
* She would make temps stay until 1 AM in order to make sure the billing "spreadsheet" was turned in. (UPS does not even have a program for billers to submit all of their totals in...they use excel...)
* Does not teach certain tasks during training in order to have a reason to terminate an employee and in order to keep her position. (She makes thousands during every pay period and does nothing but gossip all day at work)
Co-workers getting along? forget about it...unless you are of high status and caucasian because racism is out in the open in the office. The majority of the management at UPS consists of caucasian descent. Workers of other races are seen working in the warehouse and billing offices...they're not allowed to even talk at times.
Bottom line:
UPS can only hire temps to work their warehouse, sort their mail, do their billing because no one in their right mind will work a full time permanent job under the conditions that UPS provides...UPS simply will not "afford" them the luxury of allowing them to work full time with benefits...
The Truth from your "Insider Employee" Andrea
Lesson: "Beware, it just may be your company who gets rated next"
