Unfortunately, a great big disappointment!
(www.puertodelcuyo.com), Villa del Faro, The Lighthouse!

We had booked and paid in advance for two very nice weeks in Nov / Dec. 08 in El Cuyo, Yucatan, but after one night departed. The beach was filthy with garbage (plastic and glass bottles, plastic bags, and general garbage left there by previous visitors); Normal household garbage could be found in the middle of the street and not placd in bin liners! Apparently and according to the caretaker this is the normal method for its disposal and later collection, Although the owners website advised that there was a couple of good restaurants, we only found ONE, which closes at 6.00 pm to make way for a “cantina” (a drunks bar!) - We went to bed hungry.
There are a couple of “stores” (little shops) in the village which offer the bare essentials like long life canned products, toilet paper and basic toiletries, etc…). The solution would have been to have a 6 hour return drive to Cancun and done a massive shopping trip, but the web page does not state this, in fact, on the homepage of the landlord (www.puertodelcuyo.com) it was expressly stated that for a stay a car is not needed (and we believed him). Likewise, it also states on the owners home page that there are Internet cafes in the village – there was none to be found (actually, the local telephone service had the remains of what used to be an internet café but no service was available).
Due to urgent personal and professional reasons we were dependant on the necessity to have email possibilities without having to transport a heavy notebook with us, so for us it was by no means possible and to have to travel with the risk of having your personal and/or office blackberry was something we did not want to do.
As The landlord had received the full rent in advance, his reactions to our complaints about his false statements on the homepage was not even to make a compromise with us, in fact he was abusive, rude, offensive and even threatening – it was very uncomfortable dealing with him! He even raised the issue of a cold front arriving – a cold front? When one comes from nearly 0°C in Western Europe to Mexico and 30 °C, a difference of 4 °C is hardly considered as a cold front! His homepage boasts so much, but has terms & conditions.
The cottage is in reality not sooo nice as in the pictures on the website as so often seen, in fact one must be careful as the pictures seen are for the villa and not the suite – the suite is advertised as a simple 32 m² but shows pictures of the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom of the villa!). We even found that the promised CD player was missing, the living room furniture is probably something for the eye but not to sit and watch a movie on the so called “Cable TV” the seats are comfortable for about 10 minutes time, The booked the Villa del Faro (the “Lighthouse” as it is called), 80m² for the villa are difficult to see, we did not have a tape measure with us to figure out what was 80 m², but we did wonder where one would place a massive shopping trip, the kitchen certainly had little space.
Conclusion: Unless you are prepared to have all shopping done by car and spend one day doing exactly that, or you wish to spend your time drinking alcohol to eating (or have to fish for your own supper) and definitely do not have any needs for Internet then the house may be ok.
Basically, I advise caution to you and others in advance - it could bring you problems, there is certainly no way of getting back your money (in fact the telephone numbers on the web site lead you nowhere), our one cost us 728 EUROS (980 US$) plus two days stress of hard earned vacation time.
And last but not least – There are many more places we discovered (offering the same if not better facilities) elsewhere in Yucatan and more importantly more reasonably price as opposed to the 56 EUROS ((78US$) we had to pay per night in Low Season!
The normal rate we found (not just in Yucatan) and paid was around 60 US$ per night.
