This isn't my first time writing a negative review for Wachovia / Wells Fargo and if I don't take my business elsewhere and soon I doubt it will by my last.
This afternoon I attempted to use my debit card and was told that it had been declined. Confused, I called Wachovia for a balance total and was first appalled that my account was in the negative; -$122.07 to be exact. The overdraft protection law went into effect on August 16, 2010 and I declined the "protection". Why was my account negative?
I entered the prompt to listen to the deposits made only to discover that I had not had a direct deposit from work in nearly 3 weeks. I immediately disconnected with Wachovia and called my place of employment only to be told that there had been a glitch in their system, the funds had been released today and would deposit tomorrow.
The instant that I arrived home I logged onto Wachovia's website and was horrified: $105 of the -$122.07 balance was in overdraft fees; as I mentioned above I declined overdraft protection. I again called and was connected to their CS department who did nothing but a song and a dance. On Wednesday I made a $5.07 in-store purchase that went through though I had $5 in my account at the time. The $105 in overdraft fees was a result of a hold on the 7 CENTS. I argued that the card should have been declined and that I wanted the fees refunded. No can do. "Would you want your mortgage payment to be declined because of a couple cents?" was the representive's reply. Yes, I would. I could run to the bank and make a 7 CENT deposit instead of paying $105 for an occurrence that should have never happened to begin with.
I cannot stress this point enough: if you are in the market for a bank steer clear of this one. Consult your local credit union instead. These major banks will do anything and everything to squeeze every last cent out of you.
