Overdraft Fees
I have never been much of a cynic but I am convinced of corporate malfeasance within Wachovia and its parent company Wells Fargo. Wachovia verbally misrepresented overdraft protection service to my wife such that she did not know she was signing up for it. And while many changes to joint checking transactions require authorization from both account holders, the addition of overdraft protection does not. Banks are very calculating when it comes to this sort of thing. They pretty much know how many millions they will make per annum based on various categories of consumer error. In this case, she and I were using our debit card and NOT encountering any rejections and so we erroneously assumed funds were available. In what amounts to organized theft, Wachovia / Wells Fargo took $1, 000 of my money in overdraft fees, compromising our ability to make rent and outright nullifying our plans in month 8 of our pregnancy to purchase what we needed for the nursery.
I belong to a growing vulnerable population of Americans who have to live from paycheck to paycheck and who due to a health and divorce-related bankruptcy 2 years prior, do not have credit cards. And because there are two people on our account, the burden is on us to log every $2 slurpee and $4 mochha latte into QuickenBooks to ensure we don't incur overdraft fees. As a previous poster discussed, the information in the bank account is not accurate. The local 7-11 for example does not allow its customers to debit transactions, so I swipe my debit card and hit CREDIT. These charges, at least one a day, float in some ether for as long as 6-7 days before posting to the back-end of my account (i.e., in holdings). In fact there seems to be no rhyme or reason to when these charges to post, and I am inclined to think Wachovia / Wells Fargo is engaged in some manipulation and creative accounting to increase the odds customers like my wife and me will overdraft. So it's the poor who suffer. (It's interesting what counts as poor these days. I pull down an $86K salary and my wife an additional $40K but we cannot find rent in metro DC for less than $2K). We have no credit and our expenses consume close to 100% of our income so we have not been able to create a savings account. THIS is who Wachovia / Wells Fargo is profiting from. Bank VPs sending their kids to college on the backs of the hard-working poor.
Overdraft fees are self-perpetuating. Before we were even aware we had the service, we were in a hole. That means less of our direct deposited income was available to us the following week which in turn caused more overdraft fees. I realized I had to bite the bullet and cancel the service even at the risk of bouncing a check or two, and I did so in spite of the fact the representative at Wachovia Central pleaded with me not to do so, ostensibly for my own sake (har har).
Wachovia gets away with this for two reasons: (1) the poor people who are adversely impacted by its malfeasance are often not educated enough to articulate their case against the bank and (2) people in general are usually too embarrassed to call attention to their indigence. But until they do, they will continue to be the exploited population. It's not the wealthy who are losing money or sleep over this. Their money is earning interest. Your money and mine is going into the college funds the bank VP set up for his four kids.

pitiful service and policies
I've been with Wachovia bank for almost 7 years now. Over the years we've had our issues (overdraft fees even though the account wasn't in the negative, triple overdraft fee for one over-drafted check, etc) but this time was the worst.
Our local branch finally installed the new ATM - where you can make envelope free deposits of cash and checks. I always loved the fact that you could deposit cash and access it instantly with your card - the idea of envelope free deposits was wonderful in my mind! I'd used it 2-3 times before for depositing small checks with absolutely no issues whatsoever.
On March 6th I had 3 small checks (totaling less than $81) to deposit. I have 2 small children and hadn't had a chance to get to the bank, so I decided I'd stop on our way to the store. I went inside to the ATM, inserted my card, chose deposit checks, waited until the door opened and placed all 3 crisp checks inside. I waited...and waited...and waited. After about 10 minutes of waiting (and hitting cancel several times) a window popped up saying "your checks are being returned - this may take up to 30 seconds" - the door opened and started growling at me. No checks. Then the screen stated to call Wachovia's 800 number for further assistance. The ATM had "ate" my checks! I went to the car and called immediately. The first guy I spoke with pretty much told me it was an easy fix - just check the deposits and see if any were stuck in the chute. Then he transferred me to "claims" - it's been a struggle since then.
The first claims assistant I spoke with was VERY rude to me. He pretty much made it out that I was trying to fraud the bank and was nothing more than a common criminal. I was appalled! He informed me that an "investigation" would be started and it'd be anywhere from 5-7 business days before I'd have access to my money. $81 isn't a lot to most people, but when your husband travels 5 days a week 70+ miles one way, it is quite a bit of money. I thought maybe I'd have better lucking calling back during the week (seeing that March 6th was on a Sunday) - but I was wrong!
I called daily and had a different story given to me every single call. They stood by their word of 5-7 business days, but it was a different way of handling it every time. I was told the deposits had to be pulled and checked by hand, the ATM would have to be serviced and possibly removed to search for the checks, the video would have to be reviewed to justify me being there, an investigator would have to look into my bank history and the other party's bank history (which would be my mother, to make matters worse) before I could be informed of anything. I finally gave up on calling, I couldn't handle the lies anymore!
Then, thankfully (as cautiously as I can say that) on March 11th, I get a credit! Hooray, right? No...it's a provisional credit. Temporary. I figured that maybe it would be a day or so and it'd be made permanent. I finally contacted the claims department again and to my horror they can take it away any time they like. The last representative told me that the bank had 10 business days to either make a decision about the investigation or give me a provisional credit. They did the later, of course. now this "investigation" can go on for up to 90 days! I flipped! What's there to investigate? The checks are made out to me from my mother's good standing account. I have a carbon copy of all 3 checks and can provide it to them. They don't want any of my help, they have to investigate it on their own.
The only good to come of this is I finally switched banks. The worst part for me is that I have to wait 90 days before I can tell Wachovia where to stick their investigation, in as nice a way as I can.

Fraudulent Banking Practices
Wachovia is the worst bank in the universe. They charged me overdraft fees after the money was direct deposited in my account. This happens on a regular basis. They paid a bill twice, when I only authorized them to pay the bill once. And, their customer service people are useless people with NO AUTHORITY. Their branch personnel in Springfield VA are the worst banking people that I have ever enountered.
This Friday, after my direct deposit is in the account, I plan to close the account, and bank with a reputable bank.

Costumer service
I called Wachovia to issue a complain about an overdraft fee that they had charged me. First of all it was a fee to my way to save account, which amazed me since i had money in my checking account ! They told me the two accounts are not together so i have to pay the fee. I found that to be absurd. Second what really got to me is that when i was speaking to a costumer service representative, he told me that he had a right to hang up on me because i was upset that i felt my money was being stolen from me ! At least that what it feels like. This people are legal thieves! Then he had the nerve to call me back and tell me he had done this all by mistake, he said he was going to transfer me to a manager, as i had asked for before he hung up on me ! But this time he left the phone off the hook sitting on his desk. Who do this people think they are ? What gives them the right to deal with our money as they please but when we commit a simple mistake we get charge $35.00, but when they commit the mistake all we get is a simple apology!

Banking
Wachovia is crap! I'm in the process of going with another bank, maybe Citizens or a credit union. Customer service sucks and the CSR's can't give out corporate number or they will be fired. It was better when it was First Union. Now they are with Wells Fargo??? HUH!

Stop Check Fee
Fees, fees, fees are the name of the game. I didn't complain when I got an overdraft fee because they covered my rent check and cleared it. (Isn't that how it's supposed to work? They charge me a fee for a service they provided, in this case, not letting my rent check bounce) Well, since my paycheck was late this week, I tried to stop a different check. I figured it was too late, but what the hell? The check cleared the next day and the following day they charged me a STOP FEE! But nothing was stopped! I was told by customer service that I get charged "even if they don't stop the check, " which translates to "even if we do absolutely nothing for you." This happened before and a customer service guy refunded me claiming it was as ridiculous as I thought it was. Now I'm told he just did me a favor. (Only one favor per year)

Ripped Off/Poor Service
Upon moving to Oklahoma, where there is no longer a SINGLE Wachovia or Wells Fargo [in the entire state], I had to switch my banking accounts over to a new big bank. Upon calling Wachovia, I sat on the phone with a representative while trying to close down my bank account and have ALL FUNDS mailed to me. Not only did it take over 45 minutes to connect with someone who would/could actually help me, but I was told it would take 2 to 10 business days to get the check to me. Frustrated by such a ridiculous time frame [this is ALL my money I'm talking about...everything], I told them to just close it down and send me the check asap. He then told me the check would be expedited and charged me THIRTY-FIVE dollars to expedite the check. WELL, FOURTEEN business days later I have not received the check. Every time I call, reps tell me that I'm "not a Wachovia customer" and it takes forever to get assistance. Even more frustrating is that I have gotten mail from Wachovia at my new address, which I gave them the SAME day I closed the account and they said they would mail my checks. They managed to send me billing statements and credit card applications, but not my money. And don't worry...it's not that it got lost in the mail. I finally got Wachovia to admit that they didn't send it on time. But they then refused to give me my 35 dollars back. This bank is honest-to-goodness one of the worst institutions with which I've ever dealt.

overdraft & closeing grand child savings account
I had a-joint checking account with a check card. I had checks out and used check card, got on account on-line checking account to make sure checks and card charges had cleared, and they had. There was around $4.00 and change still in account checks and card charges clearded. Wachovia put an over-draft charge in between clearded checkes, or card use when it should not have been placed where it was placed. I saw a couple of days later when I got back on-line to check account. I called wachovia and asked why? I was told I had to pay the over-draft, I refused, they closed my account also took money out of my 3 grand daughters savins accout and closed those accounts. The over-draft they made accur was less than the money in my grand daughters account. I gave my daughter the money to pay. She went to the bank to pay and was told they can't take it, that it had been turned over to collections. I finaly called the collections to pay, now they tell me there is a second collection on the same account. How is that, they closed the account and now putting another collsction charge on me.
We need to put a stop to this! Please e-mail me, get enough people together an file a civil suit against them,

Overdraft Fees
Well over the past couple of months I have been receiving overdraft fees. Some of them was correct but recenetly after checking my account last night and this morning they have seemed to have charged me over draft fees for things that they claimed was processed yesterday but wasn't showing yesterday as either being processed or complete. My problem with this is that any funds placed in my bank account after a certain time isn't processed until the next day and I have seen other transactions that aren't processed until the next buisness day so how could you charge me over draft fees for items that wasn't posted last night after business hours. I think banks are preying on the hard working americans that are trying to do the right thing. Yes previously I was at fault but this time I know they did something underhanded that cause me to give them $315 of my pay check. No wonder people who work today need more than one job.
