Wachovia Reviews

overdraft policy
I have had a Wachovia account for 11 years... before they bought out First Union. Recently I've also had a lot of trouble with Wachovia frivolous over drafting policy. The fact is they hold transactions that you think should have already been charged for ridiculously long periods of time... these charges do not reflect on your available funds when you make a balance inquiry. They magically seem to show up the second your account is overdrawn though resulting in several $35 overdraft fees at once.

They also hold transfers and various deposits longer than usual. I've been charged overdraft fees several times where they processed my deposit or transfer after they charge the over draft fees... sometimes with the transfer or deposit being credited on the same day. Keep in mind those transfers and deposits were made several days before the supposed overdrafts.

I've gotten refunded most of the time but, I've had to get really ugly with some of the CS reps due to their crappy customer service. Bottom line is the whole point of a DEBIT account is for cash transactions. They should not allow transactions to go through if funds are not available. Furthermore, your available balance should reflect pending charges so people don't overdraft them. We are the customer and their business is taking care of our money, not to steal it. I'm seriously starting to look for a new bank if they don't get their act together.

FALSE CHARGES TO MY DEBIT CARD
ON MARCH 13TH AND THE 21ST, I'D REVIEWED MY STATEMENT AND REALIZE THAT I'VE BEEN CHARGED FROM A COMPANY THAT IM NOT AFFILIATED WITH. I'VE NOW CANCELLED MY ACCOUNT AND IM STILL HUNTED AND TERRIFIED ABOUT THE FACT THAT MY INFORMATIONS WAS REVEALED TO CRIMINALS. I WILL NOT STOP UNTIL I GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS MATTER .

Overdraft Fees
In August 2008 I opened an account with Wachovia because it's where my parent's bank in Florida. I have been unemployed since October and have been using the account to receive funds from my parents to assist with bills. In Feb 2009 I had a garnishment placed on my account (which Wachovia never notified me of until just 3 days ago in writing) which caused a few numbers to be off but not to cause Overdrawing my account. Well I am now overdrawn by $187.10 because they charged me 5 OD fees on items, according to their website and branch paperwork, were still covered on funds in the account. They refuse to refund me these fees claiming it's my error not theirs. I have filed a complaint with the BBB but I wouldn't doubt it if they were in their pockets as well.

I do not have the exact numbers because I'm chasing after 2 toddlers and trying to do this on the fly. I just want to put my two cents in, also. I've noticed that a lot of people have the same complaint I do & I would love to help out with a class- action lawsuit.

At the end of January '09, I logged in to my wachovia.com account to check the balance only to find it about $400 lighter than it should have been.

I had 9 $35 NSF/unavailable funds fees on my account. I put a call into the customer service line and was fed a bunch of BS about 'you had check card holds that exceeded your balance'... however, there was enough in the account to cover not only the holds, but 6 of the 9 $35 fees (I was $100 overdrawn- all from NSF fees). I fail to understand how they can charge me NSF/unavailable funds fees if there is enough in the account to cover the charges PLUS the fees they charged me?!?!?! In addition to that, there were only 6 transactions that could have possibly caused my account to go into the negative (although none of them would have) and I was charged 9 fees.

I was told by the CSR that they could credit me with 15% of what they charged me and I asked to speak with her supervisor. I was told they don't put customers through to their supervisors, but that she could send my number along to her supervisor and that she would give me a call back. About an hour later, I got a call back- but I can't always answer my phone while at work so I didn't have a chance to speak with the caller. I was left a message that said 'After reviewing your account, there is nothing else we can do for you'. No number left to call her back and discuss it, no explanation as to why I was charged 9 times for 6 transactions (keep in mind, none of those transactions would have sent my account into the negative).

I was told over and over again by the original CSR 'sorry, it's our policy'.

I understand what they're doing isn't necessary 'illegal'- but that also means that it's not necessarily 'legal'. We need to get a group together to make sure this becomes ILLEGAL. In these economic times, every penny counts. They get a bailout from the government, we don't. We need that money in our accounts.

Reading some of the reports published on here already about Wachovia, I realize how far their scams have reached. When I first got my account with them 4 years ago, they were great. This lasted about two years. Ever since then, they've slowly gotten worse and worse about scamming money out of my account. Creating overdraft fees where none should have existed, then charging me more fees when these NSFs actually did cause my account to be negative. They also will create any chance they can to hold a deposit. Some don't even make any sense, such as the fact that I can make a deposit after 2 (Cut off time), and they will not credit it to my account for two days, yet if I had went in the next morning and made the same deposit, it would have been there sooner.

Does anyone else notice that their 'same day deposit' time actually occurs at midnight? I hate to inform them, but even remedial people know that midnight is when the NEXT day starts...so this is a blatant lie.

The most recent scam that Wachovia has started pulling on me is charging me NSF fees, yet my bank statement for the month shows that there was enough in my account to cover all transactions at this time. When I call the bank though, they always tell me that these transactions posted several days prior to this. I hate to say it, but this means they are giving me INACCURATE statements, which I'm sure isn't legal. Screw me over, fine...but don't try to hide it from me. I will be looking into the legality of this very soon, as Wachovia deserves to be shut down.

One last note. Nearly every post I have seen on banks has a rebuttal listed from some asanine user claiming that the banks had every right to charge this and this blah blah blah. To you, kind user, please read; regardless of the 'legality' of what the bank does, the point of these complaints is to show that these corporate entities are terrible business scams that extract as much money as possible from their customers, and the only reason these ridiculous practices are allowed is because of equally corrupt politicians okaying the laws for them.

There is no way a bank should be able to charge a 35 dollar fee for debit transactions. It hits a computer, and it's denied. What did they do on their end to require a fee? Absolutely nothing. At least for a bounced check, they have to handle it in some way. Regardless, these banking procedures need government regulations. Insufficient funds fees are now a 39 billion dollar a year business for banks...It's safe to say they want to keep it that way.

So before you comment and state 'But their agreement says'...No, that isn't even the point anymore. The point is that we are tired of shady business practices running rampant everywhere we look. Wachovia...what a joke.

Since Aug of 2008 I have requested my due date to change to the 19th of the month which is my right by written contract. They added late charges although I paid on time in excess of $800 and reporting my late to credit bureau. This organization called so many times at work that my immediate supervisor warned me my job was in jeapordy; although i asked to discuss and call me at home, they refused and harassed my elderly mother at home and continued calling me at work refusing to acknowledge the change to due date and faxes that I had sent. Mike Mitchell claimed to be the manager but will not admit he is wrong or resolve this account with me - This organization is a fraud!

I have been bitten by Wachovia's tranaction processing proceedures. The way they post their transactions, checks first, then largest to smallest debit/credit transactions, has cost us $700.00 overnight! 20 transactions and all under $15!

Last week purchased an item from our neighbor and wrote him a check for $480. As usual he didn't deposit it for several days.

Monday was a holiday so we took the opportunity to do a quick service on one of our work vehicles before using it. However, we soon discovered it needed new rotors. Per our bank register we didn't have the necessary funds to purchase the parts, but since the check we wrote to our neighbor didn't clear yet we approached him about the situation and he agreed to hold it for a few days.

Through Tuesday, February 17th, we kept a close eye on our account. We budgeted our Tuesday's operating expenses on what was available (still under the assumption that the $480 check was in a 'float' status). We arrived home from Tuesday's work at 1:30 AM Wednesday, at which time we checked our available balance: it was at ~+$198.00. However, when we awoke 6 hours later we found that we were now overdrawn by $1, 100! We were hit with 20 overdraft fees @ $35 per item - OVERNIGHT! $700 in fees!

Looking at our on-line ledger we realized the check we gave to our neighbor cleared. Wachovia posted it BEFORE any of the debit card transactions we made over the three-day weekend! They posted it as clearing on the 17th even though it did not appear on the on-line ledger when we checked it at 1:30 AM Wednesday (EST).

Looking over the on-line ledger, there were transactions from as far back as the 12th that 'posted' on the 17th. Purchases we made DAYS prior to the check being presented were posting AFTER the check was. And since Wachovia posts largest to smallest, all our small transactions from the previous severals days posted last - blasting us with 20 unavailable funds fees! And these transactions were under $15 and one as small as $1.84.

If Wachovia posted the items AS THEY ARE PRESENTED, we would have 1 (ONE), unavailable funds fee, not 20!

And to top it off, going by their on-line ledger, there were only 13 overdrawn transactions: 5 transactions that posted, 2 pending, and 5 on hold.

I called up Wachovia and spoke with two representatives and two supervisors who all told me there was nothing they could do. They said that since it was not a 'bank error' there was nothing they could do. And since they reversed some charges for us back in September, (fraudulent charges that hit our account) they couldn't even give us back the customary $250 refund.

When I asked them why we were being charged 20 unavailable funds fees when I could only see 13 per their on-line ledger, they said that the amounts on HOLD would fall in order of amount, and thus reveal that 7 additional transactions were now unavailable.

I am so frustrated with Wachovia. Their posting process should be illegal! They should post transactions as presented. And not favor certain transactions over others. They should post all transactions as presented.

I don't know what to do. I plan on filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, but I don't see that resulting in a refund any time soon - if ever. What is going to stop them from doing this to others? Something must be done to stop them from these practices! This is predatory banking and it must be stopped!

Overdrafts fees
The bank said i had 60.00 and then my direct deposit hit and i had 49.00, i then had 6 charges 35.00, 20.00, 20.00, 8.97, 6.93, 9.78...it was .68 cent over and i was charged 210.00. So I am changing back to my credit union. FSNB they at least kiss you before you get "fd"

holding of money
I have an account at Wachovia and my employer (which is a well known place of business in the area) banks through Wachovia. I deposited my check on Friday. When I went to get money on Saturday, they said it would take until Wednesday to get any money. But before I opened an account, I would cash my check there with no problems. So it seems like it's easier to get my money without having the account. So I'm going to close it. They also opened my account without giving me written notice of their schedule of availability of funds. They mailed that to me almost two weeks later. I belive according to FDIC, they have to give you written notice of this before opening an account. They also have to post it conspicuously in their banks. I'm also going to write a formal complaint to the FDIC. They shouldn't be allowed to keep up from our money! It's a total misuse of power!
