Terrible experience
I have a loan with Wachovia. I informed them that I lost my job 3 months ago and am only one month late with my car payment. They call me everyday and harass me as if I got a job and check overnight from the last phone call I received. When I contact the service department, they send a scripted message. They are very unprofessional and I would HIGHLY recommend you do NOT work with them.
Stay away from Wachovia!

Deceitful Practices / Unconscionable Attitude and Application of Policy
Legal actions are currently being explored regarding this complaint. I have yet to hear any response from a responsible party at
Wachovia. I have been thoroughly ignored.
Dealing with Wachovia has got to be one of the most aggravating and insulting experiences I have ever had. Rest assured, after
my latest experience with Wachovia, which forced me to close my account, I was mad as hell. Thoroughly livid. I still seek what
was taken from me, I will not quietly concede my hard earned money to policies which are at best deceitful, and at worst malicious,
in both design and impact. I am currently demanding a full refund of my overdraft fees, totaling more than $500 over my year being
a Wachovia "customer". If this does not occur, legal action will certainly be taken, and likely for a far greater amount. I have
retained all written documentation of these incidences.
Wachovia has shown unconscionable conduct in applying their overdraft policy. They have also misled me concerning the
balance displayed at ATM machines upon my daily inquiry. As I have done without problems at many other banks, my preferred
method is to monitor my balance by checking it daily. In my previous experience, the balance displayed is always accurate. The
ATM at Wachovia shows the customer an inaccurate balance, and this is chiefly to the bank's advantage. Wachovia does not
show pending charges as subtracted from the balance total- yet, the bank is quite aware of pending charges (holds), and still
deducts overdraft fees based on them. (Wachovia then applies any overdraft fees, which of course immediately show up in the
balance!)
Wachovia demands that the customer precisely use a small blue ledger book, conveniently blaming any missteps on improper use
of this medium, or even for using anything other than that blue ledger book. They also blame the customer for not knowing this,
among the other fine inner workings of the bank. Firstly, it is not Wachovia's business to dictate the precise type of paper medium
for keeping track of spending. I have employed different methods without error in the past, so long as I am provided honest,
accurate information. What I typically do works just fine. The balance displayed on any ATM must directly reflect what is
available to spend, otherwise it is deceitful. Interestingly, I was not informed that I had to "ignore what my account balance says"
(that is a direct quote from a bank employee!) until after a costly series of overdrafts. I am inclined to believe this is a deliberate
obfuscation, designed to confuse and take advantage of customers not in the know. This opinion is further emphasized by my
difficulty in obtaining any overdraft protection throughout my duration as a Wachovia customer.
When I first opened an account with Wachovia in early 2007, I discussed my financial position with an executive. I was very
specific about my recent unforeseen health complications and mortgage markups which had put me in a position where I must walk
a very fine line financially. There is nothing I could do about this, it was simply my situation at the time. I insisted that overdrafts
were likely, as I struggle to afford medicines on a monthly basis, and that this important stipulation had to be addressed. I was led
to think by this employee, whose conduct and responses were very optimistic and reassuring, that obtaining overdraft protection
would not be an issue for me as my credit was in good standing. I had overdraft protection for many years at a competing bank,
and I even presented this competing bank's credit card, which I still possess. I was comfortably told that getting one at Wachovia
would not be an issue. This did not turn out to be true, as my application from that day was rejected. Shortly thereafter, I absorbed
a set of 2 or 3 overdrafts, and subsequently attempted again to get protection. This second time I received a rejection letter stating
I was not eligible for a credit card because I had a record of "overdrafts on my account." That was the printed reason. Seriously.
In November of 2007, I experienced a series of 7 overdrafts (due partially to a late direct deposit from work), all placed on very small
amounts of spending (53 cents, 3 dollars, 7 dollars). I was outraged at the abhorrent figures being freely siphoned from my hard-
earned money. It was an insult because I had led to think I could easily get overdraft protection, but had then been denied for a
redundant reason once my money was direct-depositing into their bank. Explanation of this yielded no cooperation from anyone at
the bank, none of whom could provide a clear answer about the reason for my initial denial. Obviously, I tried for awhile to get my
money back, always being told robotically and indifferently "if it is not a bank error, there is nothing we can do, " an immensely
convenient policy which punishes the customer no matter the circumstances. Later during a visit to discuss these issues the bank
had been causing, while patiently disputing their practices, I was personally belittled by a passing Wachovia employee who had
apparently been eavesdropping. While discussing the unrealistic absurd, obtuse nature of the whole situation, I was curtly
informed that banks have "high standards" concerning who they grant credit cards to- thereby insinuating that someone such as
me, who works retail and experiences overdrafts, must obviously possess a low credit score (this is not the case). Despite their
compulsory tone of understanding, when it was convenient, other employees routinely failed to make any distinction between
being financially irresponsible and being strapped for cash; i.e. poor. There is a huge difference- as any reasonable person knows.
Despite my patient inquiries, explanations, and objections I was constantly relegated -labeled- into some social category of being
"financially inept."
"Wachovia is perfect, if we made no error, obviously the customer is wrong to involve us" "This customer doesn't have $100, 000
account, so we don't have to do anything significant for him." "He's not rich, we're not interested. Poor customers are plentiful, and
expendable." That, in a nutshell, represents the attitude displayed through Wachovia's policies. It is basically a crime not to have
loads of money. You will be brutally fined for every cent that you don't have, whether you can help it or not. This innate
consideration drove my frustrations into a deeper and more personal anger. Hence this letter.
I went back a different day. I again patiently discussed with a different bank employee my precarious financial circumstances. I was
informed by this particular employee that I could "opt out" of the overdraft problem altogether (which is, in retrospect, like adding
insult to injury). In an empathetic tone, they assured me it was "something they did not normally do." Despite my reservations
about even remaining a customer at Wachovia, I reluctantly decided it was too much hassle at that moment to switch banks. I
"withdrew" from the overdraft program, once again being calmly reassured that finally this should resolve any future issues with
the bank. Again they told me I ought to re-apply for a credit card.
A few months after, I unexpectedly endured 4 more overdrafts. I received the notices in the mail, days after the first event.
Additional overdrafts may have been prevented by the simple courtesy of an automated phone call, or e-mail... but that sort of thing doesn't buy the marble
flooring for their banks. This time, I was forced to borrow money to pay the mortgage, and even to prevent further arrogation of
funds from my account. Initially, there was anger and disbelief at the realization that Wachovia had again liberally helped itself to
my bank account. Reluctantly, I went back into the local branch and patiently endured another vaguely evasive response (trotted
out in a matter-of-fact tone) of "processing credit versus debit, " and the same responsibility-shrugging platitudes: if I had
"balanced everything correctly, " and that if it is: "not a bank error..." Honestly, at that point, I could have cared less about these
redundant technicalities, all of which clearly act in a moral vacuum, as they are essentially oriented toward ransacking the customer
in a predatory fashion under the guise of policy. A line was crossed, and my anger has become absolute. That day it was very
difficult for me not to create a scene. Can you imagine.
Let it be known that I absolutely will not be fined as though I am a criminal, merely for being in a certain social circumstance. Being
in a financial corner is not akin to crime; I cannot help being occasionally broke through events not of my doing. I will not allow my
money to be arrogated by those I entrust merely to hold it. I will not be repeatedly led to believe my money is secure when it clearly
is not. I am a hard working person, who per hour makes only a few dollars more than minimum wage. Yet beneath insurance costs,
utility bills, mortgage, and the constantly rising cost of everything, the ends do not always meet. I now work more than full time,
out of sheer necessity, 6-7 days a week. I had to work even more to make up for these exorbitant fees. Furthermore, I do not spend
money on luxuries. I do not drink or smoke, I do not spend any money needlessly. Every overdraft fee represents 3 squandered
hours of my life. Wachovia has taken more than $500, an enormous sum of money representing nearly a week and a half of my life.
If a Wachovia employee is reading this: imagine losing nearly two paychecks yourself- just imagine the impact that would have on
you. This money became Wachovia's through a confusing architecture, and a unilateral application of harsh policies. Regardless
of any hardships. Regardless of verbal promises and intentions. I was coaxed, by Wachovia, directly into a trap where they could
somehow legally "mug" me. I have the feeling these overdraft fees are precisely how they make much of their money.
This is a bad debt, which absolutely consider as still owed. Such high penalties are more than the mere loss of money, these fees
exemplify an egregious trespass upon otherwise commonsense respect for human beings. They also demonstrate a huge social
prejudice. Therefore, they are very much a gesture of ill will toward those faced with hardship and meager existences. Wachovia
cannot legally place a sign in its windows that "no poor people, " yet it can construct and deploy devices and policies designed to
exploit and deter the financially challenged. These sorts of overdraft policies have no place in today's ever more difficult financial
climate. No bank has the right to take a $35 penalty for a $1, $2, or $3 transaction, let alone several times over. It is unconscionable.
But somehow... I think you already know that.

Auto Loan Departent
Run, don't walk as far and as fast as you can if ever approached for a loan by Wachovia! Working in the construction industry, my husband and I were not able to make our October and November payments for our Suburban. First time ever (as admitted to by Wachovia personnel). Doesn't matter to them for the last 2 weeks, I have been harrassed, belittled and humiliated by this company. Last Monday, I call and speak to Maria to make payment arrangements. I told her that I can make a 1/2 month payment on the 5th, another one the following Friday (the 12th), a full payment by the 19th and since I would have December's payement come up during that time, another full payment by the 26th. This would make my account 100% current by the within 30 days of our call. Maria informs me this isn't good enough I have to pay her immediately. Being Thanksgiving week, I explain that's just not possible. Maria informs me that's not her problem and she won't guarantee the truck won't be picked up. We hang up. I call back to make sure I had her name correct and speak with Xavier, who informs me that it's Maria's call as to whether or not the truck gets picked up. On Wednesday, I receive a call from James. I explain to him what happened Monday with Maria and he tells me she noted in the computer she spoke with me and he's trying to get a payment arrangement. After a lengthy conversation with James, we agree to the terms I had attempted to get with Maria. Then he tells me the checks have to be post dated. I explain the payments are coming from a corporate account (for our dieing construction company) and we aren't allowed to post date checks. James says I'll have to speak with his supervisor. A Danny M. gets on the phone and I explain all over again. He tells me to get a loan from someone else for the payment and get terms from them. He tells me if I don't post date the checks, he won't help me either. I tell him again I can't post date checks. He says "Guess I can't help you then - your choice" and hangs up on me! I start calling around and am able to get the money together to make a 1/2 payment on the 1st, a 1/2 payment on the 5th another full payment by the 12th (which catches me up 100%) and money for the December 13th payment by the 19th. I call James back and tell him what I can do. He says "Okay. Call us Monday with that payment, ok? I'll tell my supervisor." Alls good, right? Nope! This morning, the Friday after Thanksgiving, some lady calls my cellular (I had given the number to James on Wednesday in good faith to prove I was going to make good on payments)and tells me she wants a payment TODAY! When I tell her I'd already spoken with James Wednesday and I was making a 1/2 payment Monday, she says (and I quote) "Let's be real Kristi. You and I both know you haven't spoken to anyone here about making a payment." I lost it. I told her all the people I'd spoken to and the arrangements I was making. I explained that I'd even spoken with a supervisor named Danny who'd hung up on me. She says "I'm sitting right next to Danny and he says he never talked to you." Well, either the guy I spoke with on Wednesday was a liar or this lady was. Either way, I knew I wasn't lying. She gets nasty and when I ask her why she's being a b*tch to me, she says I'm not making my payments and I'm asking why she's being a b*tch? I burst into tears not knowing how much more I can take of this company. She tells me clean out my truck, she's sending someone over tomorrow to pick it up. When I get home, I'm sobbing! My husband takes my cell and calls the place back. He ends up talking with Xavier (from earlier in the week) who says James isn't there and they don't show a payment plan in the computer. My husband tells him we're tired of being harrassed by Wachovia, come get the truck. He tells him it'll be parked out front with the keys in it. Xavier says that's not what they want and he wants to work with us. We now have payment arrangements just like we had requested. Xavier apologizes, says he remembers speaking with me earlier in the week and that if we need to defer a payment, just let him know! For a bank that's been on the news having financial problems, you'd think that they'd be a little nicer. I will spend the rest of my life making sure people know the reputation of this company! Never, ever, ever do business with Wachovia!!! They employ mean, hateful people. I hope they can all sleep at night.

Overcharged
For background purposes, I have been using Wachovia's online banking service, simply because I'm not dealing with large amounts of money, and thus a multitude of transactions.
Well, as of yesterday, I overdrew my account, and there is no question of that. I knew that I had. This transaction was for $12.33 and was listed with other holds. However, this transaction appeared BELOW an earlier transaction, so when the holds were subtracted in sequence from the posted balance, the $12.33 would send me into insufficient funds EARLY. Let me stress that this chronological error has since been fixed, and each hold is in proper sequence regarding date and time on the website, but the fee has already been applied, and that is the reason for my complaint. To better explain this, here is some information from my account's current state:
The last transaction before the $70 overdraft fee was for $2.13 and left me with $6.93, also leaving three transactions as holds. These transactions, as stated before, are NOW in the proper order, and they are $1.32, $4.10, and $12.33, leaving me with $5.61, $1.51, and ($10.82), respectively.
If the holds were NOW subtracted in this CORRECT order, only the last transaction would send me over. However, due to the fact that the $4.10 purchase appeared AFTER (or ABOVE) the $12.33 purchase (despite being nearly 13 hours apart), I was charged a $70 fee as a result?
If anyone can explain how this is acceptable, I welcome your response. However, I find it wholly impossible as well as unacceptable. If I actually cared enough to complain directly to my bank, I would, but it's probably useless. I just don't see how they can arrange transactions in whatever order they desire and make me pay EXTRA for it (not to mention fix the ordering error afterward).

Scam billing
I was working in Augusta Ga, one day I checked my balance only to find out that my account was overdrawn. I went into my local branch office to see how this happened. I was told that I had transaction from two companies that I have never had any business dealings with. So I filled out the fraud form and assumed that all would be taken care of.
Well it was not, and after many months of trying to get this issue resolved, just today I was on the phone with Wachovia headquarters and was told that this matter can be resolved if 'I' paid the $194.00 in overdraft charges!!!
I need to pay overdraft charges in order to correct a problem that 'They' allowed? Also when I moved to Virginia Beach I was in a branch office still trying to resolve this issue the lady whom I was talking to informed me that there was just (as I sat there) another transaction being done on my account, I thought surely this would help my case..
Sadly it did not. All I can say is consumers beware and if it is at all possible find another financial institution to handle your hard earned money!

Overcharged
I made several small charges that were on my on-line statement that weren't posted for a couple of days. I then made a mistake and made a charge that created an overdraft. It wasn't posted until AFTER the small charges and at that time I still had a positive balance.
Wachovia deducted $175.00 from my account for overdraft fees. They claimed that all of the charges went through on the same day and the largest one took all of the money, so all of the smaller ones were overdrafts. This was not true. The dates were clearly on my on-line statement.
I called the bank and they told me I had 60 days to pay my balance. I had $200 in a different account for automatic bill pay and wachovia transferred that money to my account that was overdrafted, causing my electric bill to be returned.I visited the bank and they told me that they had a right to transfer my funds without my authorization.
I later called a manager in their customer service department. He credited $50 back to my account and said that the electric bill hadn't been posted, there was just a hold and if I made a deposit before 2PM that day, there would be no overdraft incurred.
I made the deposit, but the electric company was notified that there were insufficient funds and I was charged an overdraft fee. I was also charged $25.00 by the electric company. When I called customer service back they told me I was ineligible for any corrective action.

Overdraft fee
I have two overdraft fees in Wachovia and they happened on Sept. 5 and 12. I called them and requested them to canceled the fee. They said since I was a new customer, so they cannot clear the fee, but finally they accepted my request. However, after several weeks, I found they didn't return money at all, so I called again. But this time, the representative told me they cannot refund the money since I didn't argue for that within 30 days. So ridiculous! U know what, they have the telephone information and may recorded down the conversation I called the first time, but they still don't want to help me canceled the fee and lie to me that they cannot find the telephone note. Currently, I decided to close my Wachovia account because I cannot trust them again.
Please remember: they steel money from customer's account

Funds being held
I deposited a check today (10/29/08) and Wachovia is holding the funds for a week! The check was drawn from a business account and it is common knowledge that transactions are electronic. Why are they keeping my money for a week????? I have had an account with this Bank for 12 years and this has happened before but it seems like in the past it has been held for a couple of days! I'm furious

Fraud and scam
I made a deposit at the Wachovia Atm Machine on Lynhaven Parkway at 3:55 pm. I woke up this morning and saw Wachovia online a overdraft fee of 105 dollars from my account. So I called Wachovia. There policy is deposit by 4pm and the money will be there the next morning. I was told it was deposited at 4pm and 23 seconds and because of that they charged me this morning and overdraft fee of 105.00 dollars. I was told its there policy. So I checked the Atm and the atm machine is approx. 3 minutes faster than my watch, car and cell phone. So watch out folks they will find a way to get your money. Desperate times.

Terrible service
Trying to open an account is a major pain. You have to jump through so many hoops that I almost gave up. The Wachovia Business account rep that I was given made me feel as though I was bothering him every time I called. It took absolutely forever to get an account set up. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't go with Wachovia!
