MORE Defective Merchandise--Will Not Rectify
Don’t Waste your Money! Smithe boasts of quality in their goofy commercials. DON'T believe it. We purchased their top-of-the-line, Drexel Heritage. The couch and loveseat purchased were both delivered with fabric pulls. They corrected one of these small tears by replacing a seat cushion cover. The other small tears were on the arm and back, not too noticeable at that point but their expert said they were the start of holes. Nothing was done to correct these. After only four months of light use, 27 additional pulls in the fabric were brought to the attention of Smithe. They took one seat cushion cover to send to the manufacturer for review. Almost three months later, we received our seat cover back and the manufacturer denies any fabric defect. Smithe acknowledged the poor quality and did offer a 'No Fee Reselection'. Sounds great except that somehow the No Fee reselection comes with a bill for an ADDITIONAL $1400! So much for 'No Fee Reselection'. More good news, the fabric has a 2 year warranty. The bad news, Smithe won't honor it because the manufacturer said the fabric isn’t defective. I would say that fabric with that many pulls must be defective. This apparently must be normal for furniture from Smithe. We were accused of having pets that clawed at the fabric. No pets here as my son and I are highly allergic to everything but fish (in a tank). Did we fall for a SCAM? It seems like we’re being swindled.

This process has dragged out for more than a year and we haven't gotten anything from Smithe but hassle and requests for more money. This must be a SCAM. We are extremely disappointed with our purchase and more disappointed in Smithe. They just say there’s nothing they can do. They won’t consider a full refund even though our new furniture with it’s numerous tears looked as if it was more than15 years old in only four months. What a rip off! We would love to start over with a company that will back their products and has real customer service. It’s criminal for Smithe to deliver damaged furniture then demand more money to fix it.

Please DON'T BUY FROM SMITHE. You WILL Be Sorry!!!

September 1st we order a couch from the Walter E. Smithe in Vernon Hills. We ordered it knowing we would need it for our party on December 22nd so made sure to order it months ahead. In the beginning of November we got a call from our sales person and she said that our order had been canceled. I asked when this had happened and she said 3 weeks ago! So I went in the next week to look for and order a new couch. When I got there she informed me that the couch order was actually going through. She promised it would still arrive in time for the party in December and I would be compensated monetary. She was then supposed to email a reconfirmation. 3 weeks passed and I heard nothing, though I emailed her 3 or 4 times. When the new contract arrived 3 weeks later, it was the same price and it said it would take 6 to 8 weeks (arriving end of January). I called Walter E. Smithe to talk to the sales person and got her voicemail. I then asked to talk to the manager. The manager promised she was get back to me the next day once she figured out what was going on. It has now been 2 weeks since I talked to her last. I finally got ahold of someone today who could tell me the date my couch would arrive and they said end of January, stating that Katie (I have never spoken to a Katie) had emailed me and sent me a postcard about it. There has been no communication from the company and they don't seem to care about my business nor the fact that it is taking 6 months to get a couch. I am telling everyone who will listen not to go to Walter E. Smithe, since the customer's satisfaction is obviously the furthest thing from their minds.

My husband and I have spent over $10,000 at this store and have had the worst experience. Both delivery times, no one has called us to give us a window and we have had to wait home all day. The order dept could not tell us anything!

Secondly, we explained that we absolutely needed our furniture by Oct 1st. The company delivered it the second week in Sept, but unfortunately, one chair was the wrong fabric (although it was correct on my order form). I immediately (within 2 hours of delivery) explained to my sales person that I wanted to either receive the correct chair by October 1st, or cancel the order. You would think that is not an issue since they had to re-order the whole thing. The order processing person, nor my salesperson returned our phone calls for almost a week. I had to track down the store manager, who just put me on the phone with the order department. Finally, my case went to Mr. Smithe himself. He agreed that delivery prior to mid to late October was impossible, but he refused to cancel my order citing small print on the contract that the store is can make mistakes, have defects, etc and the customer cannot do anything to cancel order. You would think that a cancellation of one chair on an order of over $10,000 with an expectation of more to come would be a no-brainer. Maybe it was in the contract, but what about some customer service! Finally, he agreed to give $250 credit. But low and behold, this is only on future orders. What!! I don't want to step foot in this place again, much less purchase something in the future.

I would never recommend this place to someone, and I continue to discourage people from shopping there. Hope the profit on a $1000 chair was worth it Mr. Smithe!
