Waste Management Reviews

Harassing phone calls
Waste Management begins calling regarding payment before I receive a bill. For some time I tried paying on line but at 65 years of age and not being accustomed to paying on line I was intimidated by all the security bells and whistles going off when I went on the WM website. Since I've had to pay a computer person over and over to get virus', I asked to have a paper bill sent. It is now February 17th, I have no bill in the mail yet and I have already started to get WM messages about paying my bill. This turns into harassment when the calls keep coming and I haven't even received a bill. If I could switch to another company I would but this situation proves why competition is good: when a consumer has no choice the company can do anything it pleases, including harassing a responsible older person with daily calls--usally for about $65-75...I am sick of this.

PS: Today is Feb 17th and the bill just arrived; it was mailed from Phoenix on Feb 12th--if we had weather problems as we often do I would not have received it in 5 days. And since I am leaving to go out of town until Monday I am not paying it and mailing it until Monday...this is harassment and I am sick of it.

Never again
I just found this site and would like to contribute to supporting both the positive and negative reports here. I few years back, I had a container from a competitor that WMI bought out. Without notifying me, they sent out a truck, picked up the near-empty container and then tried to charge me a service fee.

They said that I had had the container too long. I explained that time between pick ups was not mentioned in any contract with the competitor. They tried to tell me that I was bound by their standard contract. You don't have to be a lawyer to know that is wrong. They had the right to pick up the container and charge for disposal, but that was all.

When I complained to the BBB here in Jacksonville and they got involved, WMI backed down.

I would haul my own trash to the dump before I did business with them again.

Overcharged
Waste Management has a little known clause in their contract which allows them to renew their refuse pick up contract with out permission from the client, then if you cancell their service they charge three months service fee with no service. The clause is not complaint with Utah Law but Waste Management will not rescind the charge even though the contract is not valid. The reason I changed service is because they charged me $165 for 3 yard container and I got a 4 yard container from their competition for $60 per month. I would advise anyone who has service from Waste Management to check with Allied Waste for a better price and service. So when it comes to GARBAGE MOUTH---Waste Management is first in line.

Big fraud
The practices of Waste Management are abusive and un-professional. BEWARE OF ANY DOCUMENTS SIGNED WITH THEM. They expect you to sign FOR LIFE on any of their Service Agreements. There's a small clause that FORCE YOU to remain in service FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, they will renew this service agreement for 36 months for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, BEWARE.

No service
From Pleasant Hill to San Ramon, CA. There is always problem and poor service by Waste management .

Messed up billing system (pleasant hill 2009 Feb)

Moved to new place, they failed to clear trash can two weeks in a roll. Wait a long time to have someone answered only to give another empty promise.

Are we american stupid or what? why allow a company like this to monopolise garbage services. Tired of complaining about this company.

Ethics
Was employed with the company as a shop manager and Senior tech. I was the only mechanic, secretary, purchasing agent and responsible for more trucks and equipment every year, with no help. Fleet size at the time of my Feb 12 th, 2009 termination was 24 units. Upper management had verbally attacked me in "meetings", that were held behind closed doors. I had asked for assistance for approx 4 years, out in the maintenance shop; nothing was ever implemented. But during these meetings I was asked over and over to work a night shift, alone on heavy equipment. I had spoke up and said that I wasnt comfortable working alone at night, when no one was around, as the site was closed @ 5pm daily. So in Feb, 2009; I had been off work with my Son, as he was ill. Upon returning to work after being gone for 3 days, the site manager called me into his office. As I sat down @ 0830, he said I was being terminated for misuse of a company cell phone. No prior written or verbal warnings were ever issued. And to add more insult and discredit my way, Waste Management's employer response to reason for termination to the local unemployment agency was, " employee violated company safety policy, and was employed as a driver?? For entire employment period, never was I classed as a driver, only senior tech, and the pay scale for senior tech. And not once had I ever texted any one from a company vehicle, nor was I ever warned or spotted using a cell phone in a company vehicle, sending text messages. The employers response was appealed, and the appeal was reviewed in my favor.

Scam charges
Waste Management bills consumers in my city in quarterly installments. If you, the consumer, do not receive your bill for any reason, do not pay it within the first 4 weeks of receiving the invoice(it is mailed @3 weeks prior to the start of the new quarter), or do not pay the full amount, whether by intent or accident, the company WILL still pick up your refuse BUT will put your account on "suspension" and charge you, the consumer a $35 re-instatement fee.

Sounds fine, because most companies providing a service can and do charge reconnect fees. In the case of Waste Management, the do not ever inform you in any way whatsoever on your original invoice that there is a reconnect fee if they suspend service for non-payment, nor do they mail out late notices. They DO NOT notify the consumer in writing prior to imposing this fee.

You have to pay the fee or they will halt service. And you, their consumer, have no recourse.

In my case, my city has an ordinance requiring it's citizens to have trash service. And the city has a contract with Waste Management. As a result, if I refuse to pay a bill, not only am I charged a fee for reconnect from Waste Management, but I could be found to be in non-compliance of city code/ordinance and can be fined by the city up to $125. Waste Management knows this, so they charge whatever they want, and then you are forced to pay, one way or another.

I would like to know if others have had similar billing problems/issues with Waste Management, or if you have been charged a fee like this by Waste Management without any notice prior to the charge.
