So I get this job offer email to do medical transcribing, they send me a link to listen to a message and I need to do dictation which I type and send for someone to evaluate. Then I get another email telling me that I have been selected so I get another link to review the Terms of Service, so I do so. Next I am invited to an interview, this is were it get real interesting, they now inform me that I have to make a $500 investment for their special internet software, HA! I think not. So I go to the BBB to look up this company and realize that they give absolutely no company info expect for a name. There is no phone number nor address and when I got to thinking about it their bio didnt really give any company history either. So I went back to the live chat site and started asking some very direct questions and all the rep wanted to do is to get me to finish the "interview" and commit to buying the software first before she could provide any info. Well I just told her straight up that I am suspicious and I am checking with the Attorney General's office and BBB to check and see if they are legit or not. Oh she gave me some info then. Recruiter: Please hold your questions for a moment ... and we will answer all your questions.
Sarah Taylor: Hello! Are you still there?
Recruiter: Yes
Recruiter: This is your job interview. This is a guaranteed job!

Sarah Taylor: Okay...I get that I'm hired, however I would like to know more about this company before I commit to anything, especially since you are asking me to make a $500 investment. I hope that you understand my concern.
Recruiter: I will explain everything after the interview process is complete. What is your background
Sarah Taylor: Sandy, I have already had my live chat interview with someone yesterday, I have given all the information that you are asking for, now I would like to learn more about Western Medical, Inc. I hope that this isn't an attempt to avoid my questions.
Recruiter: We are a Medical Transcription company. The corporate office is located in Wilmington, DE. We have been in business since 1997. We train and hire our own transcriptionist. We don’t require the 2 – 3 years experience as most companies do. We have over 200 transcriptionists working with us on contracts we have with doctors all over the United States.
Recruiter: http://affiliated-healthcare.net/WM.htm
Sarah Taylor: Yes I read the bio, however that still doesnt explain to me who you are. You don't provide a phone number, address, nor name of your company president or any other company history.
Recruiter: We will train you and bring you up to speed to the way we transcribe. We assign you your own personal trainer to do that. The trainer designs a program specifically for you. Based on your background, experience, and previous training. That way you don't have to repeat what you already know. Here's the guarantee: as soon as you are accurate in your transcription we move you over to 'live' work and you start getting paid right away by us. We pick up all the cost for training, your only investment is in the software itself.
Sarah Taylor: The web address that you just sent me only explains about the training and the great training opportunity that is at a cost of $60.
Recruiter: You may be ready to start workingl!
Three exams are given in the beginning and if you pass, then you are put to work immediately and start getting paid right away. You only need to be accurate according to our standards.
I am sure you will do just fine.
Sarah Taylor: Right, I read all of that.
Sarah Taylor: May I have your actual street address, I would like to check the background of this company with the Attorney General's office and the Better Business Bureau.
Recruiter: As you read in the Terms of Service - The Special Internet Component is the total communication link between you and us. That's how you receive your work. That's how you send your work back to us.
The Special Internet Component utilizes state-of-the-art techniques to ensure patient confidentiality and to keep all of the transactions and operations in accordance with the HIPAA regulations and guidelines.
Let me briefly explain how this whole process works and then I will answer your questions.
- The software is the Special Internet Component.
- It's $495 and you will need that for the actual 'paid live' work.
- Are you in the position financially to purchase the software at this time?

Sarah Taylor: This is a farce and a scam!
Recruiter: There are two types of job status: employee and contractor.
While working with us you will be an Independent Contractor. There are many benefits in being a contractor. For example: you are able to deduct any expenses related to the job from your taxes. As an employee you are not able to deduct any business expenses from your taxes.
As a contractor you are required to purchase your own equipment. Almost all work at home jobs are contractor status. That’s why just about every work at home job you find on the internet requires you to pay money upfront.
Recruiter: It is neither
Recruiter: You must purchase your software to begin training. The software is licensed to each transcriber in order to keep it HIPAA compliant. Each transcriptionist must provide their own software.
Recruiter: If I could offer you a payment plan could you begin sooner?
Sarah Taylor: Then why aren't you giving me the information that I asked for...I know HIPAA...I was an HR mgr. And furthermore I have experience in medical billing and have also worked for WV Medicaid, and even though we were HIPAA compliant, we could still most certainly provide customers and potential employees the most general information such as; contact information, and location.
Recruiter: 302-351-6188
Recruiter: 2207 Concord Pike, #627
Recruiter: Wilmington, DE 19803-2908
Recruiter: I have no problem giving you that information .. we do try to get through the interview first though
Sarah Taylor: Forgive me for my frankness, but as a former recruiter myself I have always found it to be so much more effective if I am upfront and open when my candidate has concerns rather than trying to get them to answer all of my questions first.
Sarah Taylor: Thank you for the information. Please hold for a moment while I confirm.
Recruiter: I find they get carried away in their questions and forget why they are here. It is much more productive to get the interview out of the way and then answer their questions.
Recruiter: Please keep in touch Sarah.
CONVERSATION OVER!!! Go figure.
