I was staying at the hotel over Memorial Day Weekend for a hockey tournament
along with a large number of other teams. From the moment we arrived I
felt the staff was not thrilled to have us as guests and was later
proved correct. My roommate and I received a noise complaint to our
room late Saturday night just minutes after the hotels fire alarms had
ben set off. The security guard who came to the door said the
complaints had been made because of loud noise coming from our room,
but admitted he didn't hear anything more than my roommate and I
talking and didn't really see any cause for the complaint and was
"just doing his job". The next afternoon while taking a nap, I got a
private phone call from the front desk asking us to keep the noise
down later that evening. I thought this was very strange as i'd never
gotten a pre-emptive call about such a thing. When I asked the person
on the phone if they could just move us to another room he said that
wouldn't be possible. The final issue came early Monday morning. The
group had returned from our game and had taken up a courtyard in the
center of the hotel where we had hung out the night before (due to it
not being near any rooms and thus not disturbing other guests). A new
security guard approached us and was extremely rude right off the bat.
He told us to move the "party" to the hotel lobby or go to bed so we
obliged him. A number of hours went by and around 5:30am we were asked
by the hotel manager to wrap it up and return to our rooms which we
did without incident. My roommate and I grabbed our ice cooler and
headed up to our room. We did not make any noises other than our
normal speaking voices. Not 10 minutes after we returned to our rooms
we were greeted by the hotel manager and 4 security guards at the
door. The head (and very disgruntled guard) said to us, "That's it.
Pack your shit. You're out of here!" to which we asked what the reason
was. After he began to engage us and agitate the situation the manager
asked him to leave, but then told us that guests were threatening to
call the police and that we needed to leave the premises. We obliged
his requests and packed our things, were escorted to the lobby and
then dropped off across the street by one of the valets. On the way
down not only did the other security guards have no idea why these
events had transpired, but thought their own head guard was extremely
out of line with us.
The next day I checked my balance on my ATM/ Debit card and found
it was MUCH lower than it had been the day before. Upon checking the
bank website I saw a number of random charges from the hotel in the
amounts of $134.64, $234.64 and $100. I returned to the hotel and
spoke to the front desk agent who then sent out her manager, Shane
Mackanin. He informed me that due to the incidents that transpired the
night before the resort manager, Alicia Wiley (who was not even on
property) had decided to comp complaining guests rooms and charge
those fees to my card. I wasn't able to speak with her and was told
she was the only one who could refund the charges. I am not a lawyer,
but i'm guessing that is not legal in any way. I also never saw such a
policy in writing at any time.
