Dear Sir/Madame,
Dr. Gideon Cohen is currently employed by WFP Ethiopia and also recieving funding from UNAIDs Ethiopia.
Dr Gideon Cohen has been an employee (consultant ) for WFP for the past 5 years.
Since July 2007 he has physically thrown his wife of 15years onto the streets of Addis Ababa and has kidnapped the two children aged just 10 and 6 years old.
He has not financially supported his wife, has physically abused her and has denied her access to her children and have had her removed from the country, by terminating her residency permit which she has held for the past seven years. She and her children have had NO CONTACT for 8 MONTHS. CAUSING SEVERE MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL DAMAGE TO THE CHILDREN SHE HAS BEEN PHYSICALLY TORN APART FROM.
He has acted on the behalf of WFP Ethiopia, stating that the agency has given him all rights to do so, they have even funded airfairs to enable him to fly in and out of the country.
The Country Director for WFP Mr Mohammed Diab, has stated that he is within his rights to act in whatever manner he pleases because it has no impact on WFP or the benificieries, although the salary he recieves is an incentive for the inhumane behaviour.
A family has been torn apart and children are being abuse. His wife and children are suffering at the hands of his abuse, his wife has informed me that she is living in fear of returning to Ethiopia where her husband has tried and threatened to kill her, he has two male workers who he has paid to physically abuse his wife, she has reported them to the police, but with a male dominated society, they have told her she needs witnesses to the violence they have inflicted on her. Mrs Cohen has also reported to the British embassy, whom she and her husband are both British citizens and are well known and are registerd with the embassy, they have also informed her they can not help her. She is in need of help to gain access to her children, who are in need of their mother.
Dr. Gideon Cohen and WFP are breaking some rule of employment and human rights to allow this to happen.
Mr Mohamed has informed his wife that he is going to renew Dr Gideon Cohen contract in October 2008 even though he has exceeded the maximum time allowed for any consultant to be employed by the same agency, he said he will get another agency to pay him to continue his actions of abuse. Causing more distress to Mrs Cohen who is in no financial position to recouperate finances from her marriage to Mr Cohen, being a housewife for the seven years they have been living in Addis Ababa and giving birth to their last child.
Mrs Cohen was on her own at the time she gave birth in Addis Ababa, not knowing the country or the people and was very scared and distressed, Mr Cohen thought it was better for him to be in Shashemane to smoke cannibis at the time.
This man should not be employed by any UN agency.
This should not be allowed to happen as the UN is claimed to be the bastion of human rights,
Mrs Cohen is a human being and is entitiled to raise and support her children without the constant physical abuse she has received from her husband and his two male workers who have cause substantial damange to Mrs Cohen and emotional damage to her children.
As the ministry of foreign affairs this matter should be looked into by your department and offer Mrs Cohen every assistance. She should have contact with her children and Mr Cohen should be paying her some sort of divorce settlement because that is what she is entitled to. They were married in a Britain and they have not gone through any kind of divorce process in Ethiopia, therefore Mr Cohen should be encouraged to do the right thing, as this does reflect on Ethiopia and their human rights ethics.
