Poorer but wiser_ April 17, 2010

Virus Scam

I was working on my computer on March 7 or 8 and received a virus warning. I tried to close the window and proceed but could not. Eventually, I could do nothing but subscribe to their Security tool at which time a virus slowly began to corrupt my entire system. I had to have my IT guy come over and remove the virus and repair the damage. To add insult to injury, my credit card was charged $50.69 for the privilege and I am struggling to have it removed from my card.

Boy, I feel stupid but I could do nothing else, given my limited knowledge and the inability to reach anyone from whom I could get some direction. I even hard booted my computer and could not shake this warning. BEWARE!

Scam

My son called me from college in Colorado last weekend 3-20 and said his laptop had a virus. He kept getting a pop up stating you need to purchase this program to take care of the virus on your computer. He thought it was a Microsoft program as well telling him this. He said it says the cost is $49.95. So I gave him my card number, he purchased it and it took care of all his problems. Then approximately an hour later, I get a call from my credit union wanting to to know if I authorized a charge for $102.95 out of Moscow, Russia. I told them no, I authorized a charge for $49.95 for a computer virus on my sons computer. The next day world wide soft.com deducted another $93.00 from my account. Both of these charges also had additional charges of conversion rate fees. I called the number i found in the complaints (1-800-469-9689) and spoke to a Valerie who was in London. She wouldn't tell me the software company she worked for but said World-Wide is the merchant they use to bill for their products. I told her "her products" or the company she works for is a fraud and has been turned into the FBI. She gave me reference numbers for both the amounts to be refunded to me and said it can take up to 5-10 business days. I had to block my ATM card, go to the credit union and file a dispute form. I tried calling back today to check the status of my refunds and one minute it would say the est. waiting time to be on hold was 8 minutes then it jumped to 14 minutes then 11 minutes then 5 minutes. WHAT A PAIN IN THE TAIL FEATER!!! $200.00 approximately for NOTHING but trouble. UGH!!!
