By Scammers for Scammers
I'll admit I didn't do my homework when I signed up with Yahoo Personals for a 3-month subscription. Probably 80% of the men who contacted me were romance scammers from West Africa. They post fake profiles - complete with fake photos - on Yahoo Personals, which, as far as I've been able to learn, is the only major online dating service that doesn't ban West African IP addresses to protect its users from these scammers. When I used Yahoo's "handy" fraud reporting system to alert them to the fake profiles of certain users, I never heard anything back. Most of the profiles of users I reported - who I KNOW to be fake - are still up and running. By failing to act aggressively to protect their users from these scammers, Yahoo Personals in effect encourages online scamming.
After learning about romance scamming, I used the complaint link to tell Yahoo that I was unhappy with my subscription, I didn't want to renew, and that I was having difficulty figuring out how to cancel the service. Still nothing. Last week, I was informed by PayPal of a $60 charge from Yahoo to renew my subscription. I complained to both Yahoo and PayPal about this unauthorized charge. I never heard back from Yahoo, but PayPal contacted me to decline my request to reverse the charges - but at least they told me how cancel the automated link Yahoo established with PayPal for ongoing charges.
The first romance scammer that contacted me claimed to be an American widower whose permanent residence is in New Jersey, and who is currently working in the construction industry in Nigeria. He had a nice picture and was very articulate. I never lost any money to this guy, but I lost the time I wasted chatting with him. One night, after a few weeks of chatting through Yahoo Messenger, he asked me for my credit card number for what he claimed was a $10 online purchase. His explanation of why his own credit card wouldn't work was wonky, so I started Googling terms like "Nigeria personals" and "romance scam." I got so many hits it was mind boggling. One website was especially helpful, http://www.romancescam.com. They have a database of known scammers, a collection of the fake photos used by the scammers, and a blog where users share their horror stories. This website also has links to a SAFE AND FREE ONLINE DATING WEBSITE, http://www.datingnmore.com/. I also learned about an online "sport" called "scam baiting, " which endeavors to turn the tables on the scammers. You can find info on this at http://www.419eater.com/ or http://www.thescambaiter.com/. I also learned enough Nigerian creole words online to completely confuse the scammer I mentioned earlier. During a chat session, I mentioned that I had a dog. Of course, being the gallant gentleman, he asked my dog's name. I answered "Mugu, " which is the Nigerian slang word for "big idiot, " which is how they refer to a person they're scamming. They call themselves "guymen" (the singular is "guyman"). Online scamming is considered a worthy profession in Nigeria and a couple of other West African countries. It's also prevalent in Russia and Malaysia.
If you're thinking of joining an online dating service, please educate yourself about romance scams. And stay away from Yahoo Personals - they are as bad as the scammers they harbor.

Terrible service and faulty profile review
Yahoo Personals has a faulty profile review software and TERRIBLE customer service. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE!
I have been a member two separate times with Yahoo Personals. My second profile kept getting blocked because it was tagged as having "personal information" while it had absolutely none. No matter how many times I edited it and re-submitted the profile with the objective of circumventing the problem, it kept getting flagged. All of my numerous requests for a remedy requested through the site's request for help channels were ignored or dealt with by a canned message. The service was terrible and I wasted all my money without any use of the personals service. They did not refund my money. Do not use this site. You will be dealing with faulty, software and there are no PEOPLE to help you.

refusing to allow termination of services, charging my account
I terminated my $83.xx subscription to them before the next payment was due - they charged my account anyway and refused to acknowledge that I had done so even though I could easily relate to them the screen that popped up when I was cancelling that offered me a half price deal to which I declined, choosing to simply cancel as soon as the current deal was done. A few weeks later I happened to look at my account and saw they'd taken the money out anyway. Writing them brings them an offer to refund the difference between this subscription which they then replace with a monthly subscription before they then cancel the prior $83.xx when then give you the difference at some point. All this can only be done with a phone call somewhere. I am quite disgusted with all this so I googled the matter to see if I was the only one and obviously this is a pattern for them.

Michael Amre
I subscribed to Yahoo Personals because I got an email from this guy, Michael Amre. We corresponded (IM, email, phone) and then he said he would visit me in Manila. He then asked me for "assistance" to come up with $4, 000 to cover his expenses (tickets, etc). He said he's pay me back upon his arrival in Manila, cause he would have to wait for his pay check. He asked me to transfer the funds to him via Western Union. I actually had my credit card out already, when i checked his flight details, it did not show any stop over. I travel, so I know that there's no direct flight from London to Manila. So, alarm bells started to ring. I then emailed him to check which airline he booked with. He, of course, could not answer me. I then told him NOT TO SCAM ME. I reported it to Yahoo Personals this morning (Mla time) and yet, up to now (its already afternoon for me), they have not provided me with a feedback. I dont know what else to do. I just want to make sure others are not subjected to this. Cause if I were not a seasoned traveller, I would have kissed my $4, 000 goodbye. Please help. Thanks

false advertizing
I am a 25 year old woman who signed up for yahoo personals, I've been on there 3 months and in my persute of finding another woman to be with I've found that all the attractive woman on personals are a scam. All with the same story of Dead parents, missionary in Nigeria...please send money. I personally have talked to about 20 supposed women who have all had this story. Its very sad and upsetting that I've wasted my money on little more than a petty scam. Its my belief that personals is aware of these scam artists and allows them to post profiles because it looks good for there website to have attractive profiles. I wouldn't even put it above the people running it to be the scam artists themselves...who does run personals anyway?
Sincerely pissed off,
Nicole in MA

Yahoo has great service
I wanted to say that Yahoo gave me great service. I just called the number that appeared on my credit card bill and ended up talking to two people and they took care of my concern.

Misrepresentation
I received an e-mail from Yahoo Personals to try a 7 day "free pass" with Yahoo Personals. I understood that if I did not cancel before the 7 days, my credit card would be charged. I cancelled after 4 days and on the 5th day, the charge went though (the monthly charge) and I was stuck for a whole month that is not in use. When I called, it was pretty much "too bad" and that the free pass was for "new" members only even though it had been over a year since I had subscribed to them. Bad misrepresentation by them and will NEVER use them again.
